Govt to raise tunnel issue with Pakistan

Fumed over the discovery of a secret tunnel across India-Pakistan border in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir, the government is gearing up to lodge a protest with its neighbouring country--Pakistan.

“It is a matter of concern...This matter is being discussed at the highest levels among Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs. An appropriate response and an appropriate way will be found to take it up with Pakistan,” Union Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi on Tuesday.

This was his last press conference as Union home minister as in the evening he was shifted as finance minister.

On July 28, authorities detected the 400-metre long tunnel after an area caved-in at some places due to rain near fencing close to Chillayari Border out Post (BoP) of BSF along the IB.

The tunnel starts from Pakistan's Lumberiyal BoP and ends on India’s Chillayari BoP, which suggests that the digging cannot have been done with out the connivance of authorities on the other side of the border. The dimension of the tunnel also suggests that it was not an exercise in a hurry. The tunnel was at a depth of 25 feet below the ground level and was of 3x3 feet in circumference with a provision for air supply through a two-inch pipe.
