Vegetable price rise hits common man

Last Updated 15 May 2009, 17:13 IST

Though the prices of vegetables reduced in the last month, in the current trend, prices are once again moving northward. Vegetables like Ladyfinger, Beans and Bitter Gourd have crossed Rs 30 margin and many middle class families are finding it difficult to accommodate in their menu. Radish which use to be at the bottom of pricey vegetables’ list is now being sold at Rs 15 per kg. Ridge gourd and potato are being sold at Rs10 per kg while Brinjal and Tomato are being sold for Rs 15 a kilogram.

The prices of greens is no exception. The prices of almost all the greens have increased. A bunch of coriander (native variety) costs anywhere between Rs 10 to Rs 12. The two primary reasons for the increase in prices are one being summer itself while the other is marriages. Due to the scorching heat and lack of rains ground water has depleted in many areas and thus vegetables are not cultivated on vast tracts of land.

Secondly these are the auspicious months where marriage is conducted among Hindus and thus there is lot of demand for vegetables. These have moved the prices northward.
The rise in the prices of vegetables and greens have forced the people to bargain hard.
But even after a hard bargain people have to shell out more money to get adequate
quantities.
