<p>The implementation of the National Rural Health Abhiyaan in government hospitals in Mysore district in 2005 has seen a remarkable improvement in the success of birth rate in these hospitals from just 40 per cent earlier to a remarkable 99.5 per cent now, said district health officer Malegowda.<br /><br /></p>.<p>He was speaking after inaugurating the breast feeding week jointly organised by Health and Family Welfare department, Cheulvamba Hospital Children department and Inner Wheel Club of Mysore at the Cheluvamba hospital here on Wednesday and said as part of the Abhiyaan pregnancy kits were being distributed in Mysore district to woman belonging to BPL and SC/ST group who have delivered babies and 22,500 kits have been distributed in the year 2011-12. <br /><br />This helped in bringing about an awareness regarding the importance of breast milk among women, he added.<br /><br />In the rural areas there is lot of ignorance regarding breast feeding and Asha and health workers must give them proper guidance. Hence, in the 165 government hospitals and 511 sub centres, breast feeding week programmes have been organised. In order to bring about awarness the role of private medical doctors and gynaecologists is very important, said Malegowda.<br /><br />Cheluvamba hospital superintendent and children department chief Dr Krishnamurthy said, for a new born mother’s milk is very important. This is like Akshaya Patre (continuous flow). <br /><br />As soon as the baby is born if it is fed with cholestrum then it will develop immunity to diseases. <br /><br />If the mother breast feeds the baby continuously for a period of at least two-and-half-years then it will help in the growth of the baby physically and mentally and the bonding between the mother and child becomes stronger. This will also ensure the retaining of beauty in mothers and also the chances of breast and uterus cancer will not be there. <br /><br />Till six months the babies should not be fed anything else except breast milk. They should be slowly weaned introducing other baby foods. <br /><br />JSS Hospital’s Dr G Narayanappa and pediatrician Dr J V Narayan spoke and said that doctors and gynaecologists should counsel the pregnant women about breast feeding. Dr Srinivasan welcomed and Dr Sandeep proposed a vote of thanks.<br /><br /></p>
