Acute shortage of staff in Agriculture department

Out of 75 posts, 32 are filled

Acute shortage of staff in agriculture department in Udupi district is hampering the implementation of various schemes.

 About 50 per cent of the posts are lying vacant in the agriculture department. As a result,  farmers are facing problems and the work load on the staff has increased.  Post of agriculture assistants in Raitha Samparka Kendra are lying vacant. 

The agriculture assistants have the responsibility of visiting villages to give suggestions to the farmers. The sanctioned posts of agriculture assistants in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkal taluks is 19. However, there is only one agriculture assistant in the district. The total sanctioned posts, including that of Joint Director, Assistant Director, Agriculture Officer, Assistant Agriculture Officer and agriculture assistant in the district is 75.
 However, there are only 32 filled posts. As many as eight posts have been sanctioned for the office of the Joint Agriculture Director.  However, there is only one person in the office. 

The sanctioned post for the office of Assistant Director in Udupi taluk is 30. However, there are only 16 working. The sanctioned post in Kundapur and Karkala taluks are 25 and 12 respectively. However, there are only 12 staff working in Kundapur and three in Karkala. 

Kundapur and Karkala taluks must have 10 agriculture assistants. However,  there are none. 

Normally, farmers require help from the experts during monsoon. However, here there are no employees to guide the farmers.  Several agriculture assistants have been promoted as assistant agriculture officer. However, even after promotion, they have to carry out the responsibility of agriculture assistants, said an official.  Speaking to Deccan Herald, Agriculture department Joint Director M Papanna said “after the new district was carved, no additional staff was recruited in the district. With the shortage of technical officials, we are facing the problem. However, we ensure that the farmers do not face any hardship in the district.”
