'Forest dept daily wagers did not get wages since April'

Over 110 workers in Bhadravathi division and about 50 workers in Tarikere sub-division are working on a daily wage basis since 1984.

They have not received wages for the past six months, and they are forced to earn their daily bread through their children. However, they are continuing their service inevitably.

In response to a petition in the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT), the Department has been instructed to regularise the services of those with 10 years of service. However, the Department has not implemented the order.

The workers who have the responsibility of protecting forest and its produces said that they have not been given any facilities by the department including uniforms. They alleged that they are not getting even the minimum facilities being provided to MPM and Wildlife divisions.

The workers also alleged that though there is clear instruction from the Administrative Reforms Department that they should be given wages for public holidays, they are not being given the same.

“The amount is being swallowed by the officials,” a worker complained. “The State government had announced of giving an additional sum of Rs 1,000 to the daily wagers every month but some officials are blocking its implementation,” the daily wagers alleged.

Among the workers there are candidates with MA, BA and BSc degrees, and they urged that they can be appointed to many vacant posts in the department.
