CBI fails to file chargesheet; Verma, his wife seek bail

Businessman Abhishek Verma and his Romanian wife, arrested for allegedly receiving money from a Swiss arms firm to stall blacklisting proceedings against it, today moved a Delhi court seeking bail on the ground that CBI has failed to file the chargesheet against them in 60 days.

Verma and his wife Anca Maria Neacsu, arrested by CBI on June 8, moved their bail applications before Special Judge Gurvinder Pal Singh who listed it for hearing tomorrow before the concerned court adjudicating the case.

Advocate Vijay Aggarwal, appearing for both the accused, told the court that the stipulated 60-day period to file the chargesheet against their clients would end at midnight today and the pleas should be heard tomorrow.

The court initially asked the counsel to file the bail pleas after completion of 60 days but later listed it for hearing before the concerned court of Special Judge Sanjeev Jain tomorrow.

During the proceedings, Aggarwal told the court that he is filing the bail applications today and it should be considered for hearing tomorrow. The special judge initially told Aggarwal that the pleas were "premature" as the stipulated 60 days would end at mid- night today and it should be filed tomorrow morning.

Both the accused are under judicial custody till tomorrow. Verma and Anca have been accused of taking USD 530,000 from Rheinmetall Air Defence AG (RAD) for using his influence to stall blacklisting proceedings initiated by Indian government against it after the Ordnance Factory Board scam had surfaced.
