Omar endorses pension for Kashmir widows

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday endorsed the need to support the widows of those killed in militancy related incidents.

 “The recommendation made by the state rehabilitation council (SRC) in this regard should be concretised positively. Concerned officers should formulate the operational module to bring such widows under the SRC pension scheme,” Omar said.  He was  chairing the 6th meeting of governing council of SRC. Training The chief minister said the SRC should also chalk out a strategy to provide skill enhancement training to the militancy affected destitutes, orphans and widows to open vistas of job opportunities for them. He added that the SRC and entrepreneurship development institute should jointly look into this area and come up with a befitting programme to target this category.An official spokesperson said the meeting discussed the action taken report on the decisions of previous meeting of the governing council.  “It discussed extension of benefits of schemes of rehabilitation council to the widows of killed militants and wives and children of missing persons,” he added.The SRC had been created by the Jammu and Kashmir government a few years back for militancy victims’ families under which financial assistance is being provided for their socio-economic upliftment. The SRC provides a monthly pension of Rs 750 to widows of civilians killed in militancy as well as people rendered disabled.  And Rs 500 per month to old aged parents who have lost their bread earners.Under the scheme Rs 10,000 is being provided as marriage assistance to the widows and grown-up daughters of the victims.
