HC orders notice to rights panel

The High Court on Wednesday ordered notice to the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) and others in connection with a petition questioning its order to release water from Gundal reservoir to Madhuvanahalli in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district.

The petitioners, G Shantakumar and 54 others (all residents of Kamagere village in Kollegal taluk) had moved the Court challenging the KSHRC directions dated July 1, 2011. In his submission, the counsel for the petitioners said there was an error in entertaining the complaint as the matter came under the Karnataka Irrigation Act, 1965.  KSHRC had no jurisdiction to entertain the complaint, he submitted. The petitioners said that neither were they heard nor made parties to the case. Pointing out that the residents of Madhuvanahalli were not supplied water from Gundal reservoir in the past two decades, the petitioners said the villagers were supplied water from Kabini right bank canal.

They have requested the court to call for records and quash the KSHRC order.
