With an aim to improve functioning of the primary schools under its jurisdiction, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) is planning to give more administrative powers to school principals.

The corporation would soon  delegate the power of taking disciplinary action against lower-rung staff members.

“A principal will have the power to suspend staff members like peon and sanitation workers for dereliction of duty. Till now this power lay with the education department officials. The principal could at best register a complaint against the staff members,” Rekha Gupta, chairman of education committee said.

She said the present system has some gaps in it, so the corporation has decided to amend the rules.

“During the inspection round, I found out that some of the basic amenities like toilet blocks in bad shape. When inquired, the school principals complained that the staff members don’t follow their orders. The change in rules would help improve the functioning of the schools,” Gupta said. The education committee chairman further said the change in rules does not require permission from the House, so an order to this effect would be issued soon. Administrative order “I have spoken to the officials of the education department. The change in rules could be done just by an administrative order.  The additional commissioner would very soon issue the order,” Gupta added. There are around 780 primary schools under the jurisdiction of North Corporation. According to estimates, around 4 lakh students are enrolled in these schools. Most of the schools lack basic infrastructure such as benches, toilet blocks and drinking water.
