High intensity rains continue in Udupi, recede in DK dist

Woman drowns in pond in Kundapur

A woman drowned after she accidentally slipped into a pond at Devasthanabettu in Beluru village in Kundapur taluk on Thursday.


Tahsildar Lalanke Ravi told Deccan Herald that the deceased has been identified as Sakamma Shedthi (55). It is said that the woman had been to field to collect grass for cattle and while returning, she accidentally slipped and fell in the pond.


Meanwhile, the heavy rains in the area have increased the fear of flooding. Almost all low lying areas have remained submerged and the rivers have reached the danger level. The sea erosion problem has intensified in the regions like Kodi and Kodibengre. Kundapur taluk received a rainfall of 52.8 mm on Thursday. The tahsildar said that he has asked all the officials to be alert to handle the emergency conditions.


The water-level in all important rivers like Souparnika and Chakra has reached the danger level owing to incessant rains in the region. He appealed the people residing in the low lying areas of the taluk to go to safer places expecting the foreseen danger.
In Udupi, as many as six damages were reported owing to heavy rain in the area. Udupi taluk received a rainfall of 61.3 mm for the last 24 hours. According to the sources in Udupi taluk office, two houses in Yelluru village were partially damaged owing to heavy rain coupled with gusty wind.


A house of one Sadashiva Acharya in Yelluru was partially damaged when a tree fell on the house. Another house belonging to Harischandra which was situated in the field was damaged when a tree fell on the house.

The pump house in the field was also damaged. The walls of the house belonging to Suresh Naika in Bommarabettu collapsed owing to heavy rain.


In Balekudru village, a house belonging to  Harischandra Acharya was partially damaged as a huge tamarind tree fell on the house. In Shivalli village, the house of Devi Poojarthy was partially damaged when cashew tree fell on the house owing to gusty wind. In Kacchuru village, the house belonging to Sharada Marakalthi was partially damaged when a tree fell on the house.


Karkala taluk received highest rainfall in the district. It recorded 130.8 mm rainfall. According to the sources in Karkala taluk office, no damages have been reported from anywhere in the taluk.

Udupi district received normal to heavy rains in the last 24 hours. Udupi district recorded an overall rainfall of 81.63 mm.
