Lokayukta cops arrest tahsildar

R Rangaswamaiah, Tahsildar of Chamarajanagar taluk, was on Friday arrested by the Lokayukta police for allegedly accepting bribe through a middleman.


The complainant, village accountant Shivakumar, is employed at the deputy commissioner’s office. His salary was not remitted for the past seven months and he had submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar. Rangaswamaiah demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 to release the salary and later reduced it to Rs 35,000. Shivakumar lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta police.

Rangaswamaiah called Shivakumar over the phone and asked him to send the money through one Mahadeva. The telephonic conversation has been recorded, Lokayukta sources said.


Lokayukta police trapped Mahadeva while accepting Rs 10,000 in front of the tahsildar’s office. Rangaswamaiah is now in Lokayukta custody for interrogation. He is due to retire in one-and-a-half years.
