Police protection for BU syndicate meet promised

Higher Education Minister C T Ravi on Friday said he has promised to provide police protection, if necessary, for holding the long-delayed syndicate meeting of the Bangalore University.

Speaking to reporters, he said he has directed both Vice Chancellor N Prabhu Dev and Registrar B C Mylarappa to immediately convene the meeting. “The Vice Chancellor expressed concern that convening the meeting would lead to law and order problem. But I assured to give police protection, if necessary,” he added.

According to rules, the syndicate should hold at least eight meetings in a year. But not a single meeting had been held since January this year, the minister said.

Ravi said he and Urban Development Minister S Suresh Kumar held a meeting with the vice chancellor and the registrar recently to sort out the issues between the two warring BU officers.

“Both were told that their fighting in public has dented the image of the University and were asked to end their tussle in the interest of the institution,” he added. Ravi said the government will examine the proposal to bifurcate the university.
