Cops gather clues in couple murder case

Last Updated 11 August 2012, 19:30 IST

The South Division police claim to have important evidence in connection with the murder of an elderly couple in JP Nagar, and said that they would soon arrest the assailants.

“The investigating teams have collected vital information. We are working on definite leads.
We can say at this stage that it is a case of murder and we will arrest the assailants in a couple of days,” said DCP (South) Sonia Narang.

Four different investigative teams are currently working on the case. The teams have questioned several people, including two domestic helps, relatives and neighbours.

The helps and the neighbours have provided crucial information concerning several individuals and also about those who had come to clean the sump, Narang said. Police are tracking the movements of the suspects and will arrest them shortly, she added.

According to the police, the murder may have been committed over a property dispute. However, police also said, the evidence does not indicate insider involvement.

One investigating team has reportedly taken several suspects into custody — although senior officers refused to confirm the arrests. The police, however, said that all suspects will be rounded up before Monday.

The crime had occurred on Monday at JP Nagar 1st Phase, opposite the Oxford Group of Institutions.

Venkateshaiah, 76, a retired first division clerk with the Education department and his wife, Swaranamba, 68, were found dead at their house. The murders were only discovered on Friday morning.
