Driven to despair by the death of her pet, a cat, a second year engineering student committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her residence at Tomando on the outskirts of the Odisha capital on Sunday.

Pushpita Pradhan (name changed), the 19-year-old student enrolled in a private college here, took the extreme step as she could not get over the sadness brought by the demise of her pet - a three year old cat, sources said.

The cat had fallen ill last week and when it’s health condition did not improve, she called for a veterinary doctor to treat the animal.

However, despite the treatment and medication, the animal did not survive and died within a couple of hours. The traumatised girl, daughter of a school teacher, locked herself in her bedroom where the cat was lying. Her parents thought she would get over the shock soon. But when the girl did not respond to their calls, they broke open the door to find her hanging from the ceiling fan.

The family cremated both the girl and the cat at the same place simultaneously. The police have registered a suicide case. Though the incident occurred on last Thursday, it continues to be a major topic of discussion among the residents of Tomando area.

“She was treating the cat as her brother and used to tie rakhi on the animal for the last three years,” sources in the family said.
