Nine of a family killed in accident, 13 injured

Nine members of a family from the City were killed and 13 seriously injured in a major road accident at Kanakpura on Sunday evening when a  goods vehicle in which they were travelling fell into a deep pit.

The accident occurred when the van carrying 22 people, returning to the city after visiting the famous Kabbalamma Temple, lost control on the narrow Kamsagar bridge  and rammed into the railings and fell into a 20-foot deep pit.

The bridge connects Kabbalu to Chennapattana. Eyewitnesses say that the driver of the goods vehicle was overspeeding on the narrow bridge and lost control when a car came from the opposite direction. 

The driver, in an attempt to avoid collision, had swerved the vehicle.Doddaveere Gowda, an eyewitness, told Deccan Herald: “We rushed down as the accident occurred. We were shocked to see that many were dead. We dragged the injured and rushed them to hospital.”

The extended family of Eranna, 40, that included 22 members, all residents of Nagadevanahalli, Kengeri, had gone to the famous Kabbalamma Temple at Kabbalu.  After offering prayers, they left for home around 6 pm. 

Anupam Agarwal, SP, Ramnagar, told Deccan Herald: “The accident occurred due to the negligence of the driver.  Nine people, including two children and two women, died on the spot and 13 seriously injured.

“All the bodies have been shifted to Kanakapura Government Hospital. “The injured are being treated at Kanakapura Government Hospital and Nimhans, Bangalore.”

The dead had been identified as Eranna, 40, his wife Gangamma, 30, their son Chikkaraju, 12, Bada Chittaiah, 50, Chikkamma, 40 and her son Eliyappa, 20, Raja, 35, Chikkana, 35 and Manju, 13.
Of the 13 injured in the accident, many people are reported to be critical.  The Police have registered a case into the matter.

Mahesh, one of the injured brought to Victoria Hospital late night told Deccan Herald that Umesh was driving the vehicle. He also added that Eranna and his family had been to the temple to fulfill a vow.
