Officials not above law: High Court

The High Court on Monday observed that government officials were not above the law.
“You government officials think that you are above law.

It is not so,” the Court said.

The Court’s remarks came while hearing a petition by Ramachandra Shetty, who was evicted from his property located in the protected areas in the vicinity of the Virupaksha Temple in Hampi. It directed the State government to ensure that compensation was paid to Shetty without delay.

It asked the officials concerned to ensure they come with a cheque for Rs 8.10 lakh, to be handed over to the petitioner, by the next hearing and the allotment letter of the alternative land where the petitioner was supposed to be rehabilitated.

When the government advocate tried to explain the process of allotment, the Court said it could not rely on the words of the government and reiterated that officials should come with the cheque and the letter.

“Otherwise, the Court will ask the government to maintain the status quo on the said property,” the Court said.

The government had evicted occupants of properties on the road in front of the temple so as to abide by the rules for the protected areas in its vicinity.

The properties include plot numbers 138 and 223, which belong to the petitioner.
