JOIN USIn yet another incident of crime against women in West Bengal capital, a young woman was allegedly gangraped at Chetla in southern part of the city, the police said today.
The 26-year-old woman was forced to get into a car with her eyes tied up by a group of ten unidentified men last evening near Chetla bridge and taken to an undisclosed location after half-an-hour drive where she was allegedly raped, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) P K Ghosh said.
The complaint stated the victim was later dumped during wee hours today by the accused at the same place where she was taken away from.
Ghosh said the matter was being investigated after a complaint was made by the woman with the police at Charu Market police station in this regard.
The case has been registered against ten unnamed persons under various sections of IPC on the charges of kidnapping, criminal intimidation, gangrape, elope and criminal conspiracy, Ghosh said.
A person named as Ajoy has been arrested as he was found making calls to the woman.
The complaint by the victim, however, said two persons raped her. The victim, mother of a 10-year-old girl, is a maid who was separated from her husband.
The victim's statement was today recorded at a court in Alipore here. She would undergo medical examination at the state-run SSKM Hodpital tomorrow. Foresic test of her dress would also be held tomorrow, Ghosh said.
A series of rape incidents had taken place in the city recently, including the Park Street case in which an Anglo-Indian woman was raped in a speeding car by a group of five young men in last February.
A senior official of the Park Street police station, where the victim made the complaint, was transferred after he was accused of not taking the complaint seriously.
Four months after the infamous case, another housewife was raped in a moving car in the city.
Expressing concern over such criminal activities in the city as well as in the state, Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said the police have been asked to take tough measures to prevent recurrence of crime against women.
"The government will act seriously and the culprits must be arrested and punished", Hakim said.
A senior state officer said the government was taking proactive steps with the creation of many posts in the police, making reshuffle in rank and file and finally creating new police commissionerates.
