UKCA Cup: Foreigners, locals suffer setback

Local players suffered a setback from the outsatation players on the inaugural day of the second UKCA All India Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament, at Subrahmanya Sabha in City on Wednesday.

In the first round, Dangmei Bosco from Manipur beat the local boy Bharath kumar while Saumitra Verma from Bihar beat Isha Sharma from Mangalore. Singh Sarom Rahul from Assam also cleared his path with a full point against Abhiram A Bhat from Shimoga.

Iranian Player Vasli Aref was defeated by Goan girl Swera Ana Braganza who played with white pieces. She won the game which lasted for four hours. Canadian player Nicolas Chiffott also faced a similar fate, losing his game with Akshay V Halagannavar from Dharwad.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Bank General Manger M S Mahabaleshwara Rao inaugurated the tournament. In his speech, he urged the players to play with the spirit of the game.

“Respect your opponent. Even if you are at the losing side, you can learn a lot of things from the game,” he said. He said that the Chess governing body should try to include Chess as an item in the Olympics.

Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple Managing Trustee Raghavendra Shastri, IOB Regional Office Chief Manager S K Umesh, Mangalore Airport Director  M R Vasudeva, UKCA President M S Gururaj, Vice President K R Shenoy were also present at the function.
The five-day tournament is organised by United Karnataka Chess Association.
