DU student abducted for Rs 1.5 cr ransom, released

A 24-year-old Indraprastha University graduate was arrested on Thursday for abducting a Delhi University student from Maurice Nagar area of north Delhi for Rs 1.5 crore ransom. The abducted girl was released within 16 hours.

According to Sindhu Pillai, deputy commissioner of police (north), the accused has been identified as Abhishek Deep, who hails from Chhattisgarh’s Durg district.

“During interrogation, Abhishek confessed that he was in dire need of money to find his expenses. He then made a plan to kidnap his friend (victim) for demanding ransom from her father,” Pillai added.

The action was taken after Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Jalwayu Vihar in Noida Sector 25, approached Delhi Police on Thursday reporting that he received a ransom call for Rs 1.5 crore from an unknown person from his daughter’s mobile phone.

“He received the call at around 10:20 pm on Wednesday and informed us that his daughter was abducted,” Pillai said.

During investigation, it was revealed that the victim was in contact with Abhishek. On Wednesday,  Abhishek called the girl while she was outside her college and asked her to meet him at Shastri Nagar metro station.

“They reached Connaught Place where he took her mobile phone and made a ransom call to her father. He then switched off her mobile phone and threatened her that he had made a ransom call to her father and directed her to obey his instruction, as otherwise her father would be killed,” Pillai  said.

Hence, the victim accompanied Abhishek to Hotel Ashoka in central Delhi’s Pahar Ganj area, where he forced her to book a room in her name.

Abhishek then locked her inside the hotel room. Cops made intensive search for the victim and subsequently, apprehended Abhishek from Hotel Ashoka and rescued the victim from a locked room.

A case has been lodged against Abhishek under sections 364A (kidnapping) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at Maurice Nagar police station.
