A teenager was injured when a group of 12 men allegedly barged into his house in Shakarpur area of east Delhi for robbery on Wednesday evening.

Police, however, claim that the incident took place due to rivalry between two groups in the area.

The injured Karan Verma, 19, lives with a joint family in a building in Shakarpur U-Block. Karan claims that he was with his grandmother Daya Sawant, aunt Nanda Sawant and sister Pinki when the robbers barged into the building at around 8 pm.

Karan was on the first floor and his relatives on the second floor, while the ground floor has been rented out.

He alleges that eight men entered the second floor and robbed Rs 18,000 cash and gold jewellery after overpowering his family members.

Hearing the commotion, Karan ran upstairs to see what had happened. He claims that he was beaten up with iron and wooden rods when he tried to prevent the robbers from escaping.

In his statement to police, he also says that he was thrown off the second floor, but managed to escape unhurt by catching hold of electrical wires and cables.

Four of the gang members, who were waiting on the ground floor, then went outside and began thrashing Karan. All the attackers then managed to flee, but one was overpowered by locals and handed over to police.

A call was made to the police control room after which Karan was taken to a local hospital and was later shifted to Max Balaji Hospital in Patparganj, where he is undergoing treatment.

On the other hand, police claim that rivalry between two groups in the area led to the attack on Karan.

“It is suspected that a gang linked to Karan had attacked a rival gang member last week,” a police official said.
A case of attempt to murder under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged over Karan’s statement. Cops are questioning the detained youth to confirm the sequence of events.
