Custody of Mumbai rioters extended

A metropolitan magistrate court, on Sunday, extended the police custody of 23 persons arrested for their involvement in August 11 violence that left two people dead and 55 injured.

With this, the remand of the accused, now under crime branch police custody, will come for its next hearing on Friday.

The special investigation team (SIT) led by two senior officials, which is probing the case, said in its plea filed before the court on Sunday that the custody of the accused needs to be extended to trace and identify the “vandals and hooligans” responsible for the mayhem.

The SIT also said it is tracing the pistol which, it believes, was used to kill the two victims.

The SIT said the gunman may still have several rounds of ammunition in the weapon.
