No heroine for Akshay

For the first time in his acting career — which spans a whopping two decades — actor Akshay Kumar will have no leading lady to romance on screen in his upcoming film, which is a Southern remake.

The movie is a remake of the Malayalam film Pokkiri Raja and will be directed by Anthony D’Souza, who worked with Akshay in ‘Blue’.

The 2010 Malayalam film featured Mammooty, Prithviraj and Shriya Sharan in the lead.
The Hindi version, either to be titled Naam Hai Boss or simply ‘Boss’, will see Akshay stepping into the shoes of Mammooty.

“It is for the first time that there will be no heroine opposite Akshay Kumar in the film. He is playing the role essayed by Mammooty. But there will be two young newcomers — one hero and heroine,” sources close to the project say.

Actor Mithun Chakraborty has also been roped in for the project, sources add. The writers of the Hindi version, Sajid-Farhad, are excited about the project.

“We are writing the screenplay and dialogues for ‘Boss’. The basic plot and soul of this movie remain more or less the same. But we will definitely make a lot of changes considering the presence of Akshay and the audience,” Sajid-Farhad say. The shooting of the film will commence in either August or September and it will release next year.

Best friends on the set

Actresses are known for backbiting and cat fights, but Juhi Chawla and Sonakshi Sinha seem to be exceptions that prove the rule. Apparently, the two actresses hit it off quite well while shooting for Son of Sardaar in Patiala. In fact, the two used to shop at local markets together for hours. According to a source from the sets of the movie, Juhi and Sonakshi would disappear for hours whenever they have afternoon time off during the 15-day shooting schedule in Patiala. And what were they busy with?

“They used to go to local markets to shop for souvenirs and local stuff from there and not come back for hours. It left Ashwini Dhir, the director, quite bugged,” the source adds. Son Of Sardaar also features Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt in key roles. It will release on November 13.

Period film in the pipeline

Kochadaiyaan has been creating ripples in the industry for no end of reasons — after all, it stars Southern superhero Rajnikanth and Bangalore export Deepika Padukone. And now, Sony Music Entertainment has acquired the music rights of the upcoming film. This Tamil period film, directed by Soundarya R Ashwin — Rajnikanth’s daughter — also stars Deepika Padukone, Shobana, Rukmini Vijayakumar and Jackie Shroff among others. Kochadaiyaan is shot with motion capture in 3D and the music is composed by A R Rahman. The film will be dubbed in Telugu as Vikrama Simha and will also be released in Hindi, Malayalam, Japanese and English.
Kochadaiyaan is slated to hit theatres on Rajnikanth’s birthday on December 12.
