‘Cottage Mela’

A ‘Cottage Mela’ is being organised by the Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE) till August 26 at Safina Plaza, Infantry road. The ‘Mela’ provides an opportunity to behold the rich and varied art and craft traditions of India’s culturally enriched regions.
Jewellery, art objects, paintings, metal ware, woodcraft, furniture, lamps, pottery, women’s and men’s wear, saris, shawls, accessories, dress fabrics, marble craft, herbal products are on display.

‘Family Album’

The screening of the film ‘Family Album’ by Nishtha Jain will be held
on August 31, 6.30 pm at Bangalore International
Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage.

Creative writing

Science congress

In connection with the ‘20th National Children’s Science Congress-2012’, Suchitra Balajagath, in association with Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, is holding a workshop for teachers of high school and middle school. This will be held on August 30, 10 am at Suchitra Premises, Banashankari 2nd Stage. The theme is ‘Energy:  Explore, Harness and  Conserve’. ‘Bloody Boys’

Suchitra Film Society, Bangalore will screen the Swedish film, ‘Bloody Boys’, on August 25, 7 pm. The venue is Suchitra Auditorium, Banashankari II Stage.

Craft show

The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, popularly known as Poompuhar, is holding a crafts’ mela to help artisans market their products.
One can find a variety of handicrafts to choose from — oil lamps, incense and perfumery, Kancheepuram silk saris, carpets and wood carvings among others.

The exhibition will be held at the Poompuhar sales showroom at 104, Brigade Road till August 27, from 11am to 9 pm.

Hindustani strains

A Hindustani vocal recital by Priya Purushothaman will be held on August 24, 6.30 pm at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage.

In memory

Karaikudi Brothers Traditional Veena Institute and Ananya are presenting a veena concert by Kalaimamani S Srinivasan, (a disciple of Rajeswari Padmanabhan), accompanied by Ganakalashri C Cheluvaraju (mridangam) on August 25, 6 pm at Ananya Sabhangana, 91/2, 4th Main, Malleswaram. This is being held in memory of Vainika Vidushi Kalaimamani Rajeswari Padmanabhan. It is a mikeless concert and the veena used is designed by Rajeswari Padmanabhan.

Vocal notes

As part of Sapthaswara Academy’s 99th grand monthly chamber music programme, there will be a vocal concert by Sadasivam on August 26, 6.45 pm at the residence of Dr K Gopalan, 4/2, Malleswara Mansion, 6th Main, Malleswaram.
He will be accompanied on violin by Yashasvi, on mridangam by Cheluvaraju and on ghatam by Gurmurthy N.

Mixed treat 

AIM, an organisation initiated by Suma Sudhindra and Veena Murthy Vijay, will present ‘BIAF Celebrates Harmony Through Arts’ from August 31 to September 16. On August 31, 6 pm, Kadri Gopalanath will present a saxophone recital at Chowdiah Hall.
At 6.30 pm, Ranjana Gauhar will present an odissi recital — Chitrangada, a dance-drama based on Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works.

Young voices

Poornima Satish and Pavithra Ramesh, students of Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri, will be presenting individual vocal performances on August 26, 5 pm at the Indian Heritage Academy Hall, 6th Block, near Police Station, Koramangala.

Soothing recital

Music Circle is presenting a vocal recital by Ashwath Narayanan on August 26, 6.15 pm at No. 12, Basaveshwara House Building Co-operative Society Ltd, 7th Cross, 2nd Main, Chandra Layout. H M Smitha will be on violin and B R Srinivas on mridangam.


As a part of the ‘Friday Night Unplugged’ at Urban Solace, on August 24, Roy Thomas, the legendary singer and musician will perform.

Violin strains 

A violin concert by Polish musician Katarzyna Demus, a member of the National Opera of Poland, accompanied by Natalia Kapylova of Belarus, will be held on August 24, 7 pm at the The Bangalore School of Music Auditorium, No. 8, HMT / HBCS Layout, end of CBI Road (next to St Jude’s Church), R T Nagar.

It will be part of the celebrations of the 25th year of Bangalore School Music. It is being held with the support of the Polish Institute in New Delhi and the embassy of Poland.
This will be a rare occasion to hear the music of Polish composers such as Ignacy Paderewski, Fryderyk Chopin, Karol Szymanowski and international stars of classical music, Antoni Dworzak, Mikolaj Korsakow, Jan Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Diverse recitals

Sri Padmavathi Kala Nikethan Institute of Fine Arts of Mathikere Layout is celebrating Bharath Nrithya Darshan 2012 with bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, odissi and kathak recitals on August 23, 6 pm at Seva Sadan, opposite MLA College, 14th Cross, Malleswaram.

Myriad steps

As part of Ananya Nrithyollasa-3, bharatanatyam by Prakruthi L S, mohiniyattam by Rekha Raju and odissi by Vandana Supriya will be held on August 26, 6 pm. The venue is Seva Sadan, 14th Cross, Malleswaram.

Presentations The sixth batch of students of Attakkalari’s Diploma in Movement
Arts and Mixed Media will have their graduation presentations on August 24, 7 pm at JSS Auditorium, Jayanagar. The evening will showcase the students’ work.


A bharatanatyam recital in the ‘Maargam’ format will be presented in memory of S Rajaram, grandson of Mysore Vasudevachar, by guru Vasanta Vedam, assisted by Nrityakala Parishad and Vishruta School of Dance.  All items will be compositions of M Vasudevachar and S Rajaram. Dancers from Kalakshetra and Vishruta will participate in it.
  This programme will be held at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram on September 2, 6.30 pm.

Group work
‘The Real, The Abstract and The Concepts’, an exhibition, will be held till August 23, 11 am to 7 pm, at Mahua Gallery, UB City. It is a collection of the works of 25 artists from across India and explores realistic styles, abstract and conceptual ideas in different medias and techniques.
The participating artists are Amit Bhar, Anjali Sapra, Bharti Prajapati, Bhaskar Vadla, H R Das, Jagannath Paul etc.

‘450 Miles...’
A painting exhibition called ‘450 Miles of Thriving Silence’ by
Rajarshi Sengupta will be on display from August 26 to September 15 at Gallery Sumukha.

A Retrospective'
The exhibition ‘Ramkinkar Baij – A Retrospective’ will be held at the NGMA, Palace Road till September 23.
The exhibition features brilliant and skillful
watercolours, insightful
oil paintings on canvas, evocative sculptures and maquette (scale model) of his significant monumental sculptures.

Solo strokes
A solo show of paintings, titled ‘Empathy’ (‘The changing face of the earth’) by Mathew Kurian will be on display at Renaissance Gallerie till August 23. 

The photography exhibition ‘37 Indian Still Lifes’ will be on from August 25 to September 14 at Cinnamon, 11 Walton Road, off  Lavelle Road. The timing is 10 am to 6 pm.
