A fresh take on an old film

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who won accolades for playing a villain in Karan Johar’s remake of Agneepath, will be seen in a similar avatar in Yash Raj Films’ Aurangzeb. In Agneepath, Rishi played the role of Rauf Lala. He was wearing a kurta-pyjama, along with a karakul cap and kohl-rimmed eyes.

“Yes, Rishi Kapoor will be playing the role of a villain in Auragzeb,” a Yash Raj Film spokesperson says.

After the success of Ishaqzaade, actor Arjun Kapoor will also be seen in Aurangzeb. Directed by Atul Sabharwal, the film will portray Arjun in a double role and will also pair Jackie Shroff and Amrita Singh again after almost two decades. This film is rumoured to be a fresh take on the 1978-blockbuster film Trishul and will release next year.

From stage to the big screen

Versatile actor Paresh Rawal, whose play has been turned into a full-fledged film called ‘Oh My God’, says that they did not need a heroine for the film as they believe the story is powerful.

“It is good that there is no actress, as there is focus on the story — or else we would have had to find another way. I think if the story is good, then there is no risk (of not having a heroine). This story is so powerful that people will not forget the movie ever. This film is very different,” Paresh claims.

‘Oh My God’ is adapted from the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Gujarati play, Kanji Virrudh Kanji, made in Hindi as well and titled Krishan vs

The film tells the story of an atheist who incurs huge losses when his antique shop is destroyed by an earthquake. As the film has been adapted from a play, the makers have made quite a few changes to make it more appealing. “When you make a film from a play, it has to be visually powerful — when you see the film you will understand it. The film is quite different from the play, we have made lot of changes. One would be familiar with the subject but people will be surprised with the new interpretation and new scenes which are not there in the play,” Paresh adds.

“In the play, we couldn’t do certain things; so we did those in the film. Like, we have added songs to convey things. Almost 60 to 70 per cent of the film is different from the play,” he explains.

Director Umesh Shukla is full of praises for Akshay Kumar, who plays the role
of a modern day Lord Krishna.

“For this role, we needed someone who is a star but could do things in a nice way. We felt Akshay fitted the bill as he had the aura of playing God on screen and that too in a subtle and naughty way. He is very lovable character,” Umesh says, adding, “He is a very disciplined star. He is always on time.” ‘Oh My God’ is co-produced by Ashvini Yardi, Akshay  Kumar and Paresh Rawal. The film will hit the screens on September 28.

It’s now all in the family

Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor have never had the chance to share screen space in tinsel town. But now, the cousins will make up for this by sharing the platform of a reality show to promote their respective films.

The two will come together on the sets of ‘Indian Idol 6’ — while Kareena will be spreading the word about her much-awaited film ‘Heroine’, her first cousin Ranbir will turn up to promote his latest venture Barfi!. This will take place on the grand finale of the show, which is touted to air on August 31, say sources.

In ‘Heroine’, Kareena plays the role of superstar Mari. Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, the movie traces the ups and downs in this actress’s career graph. With plenty of steamy scenes, high-strung drama and raunchy numbers like Halkat Jawaani, the film is predicted to bust records at the box office. It releases on September 21.

Ranbir’s Barfi!, on the other hand, is a romantic comedy directed by Anurag Basu, which revolves around a young boy called Murphy — whom everyone called Barfi. Always ready with a prank, this character is quite a charmer — although he’s deaf and mute. While Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic character, Jhilmil, in the film, the movie also features Tollywood actress Ileana D’Cruz. There is also a buzz in B-town that Kareena and Ranbir would be seen together for the first time on silver screen in Zoya Akhtar’s
Supposedly, the real life cousins will be playing reel life siblings in the film.
