Modi's remark on women draws flak

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi came under scathing attack from his political rivals on Thursday for attributing malnutrition in the state to “beauty conscious women, especially young girls,” keen on keeping their weight under check. He said this in an interview to the Wall Street Journal.

The Congress demanded that Modi should either withdraw his statement or apologise for the “flippant” remark. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni described Modi’s remark as “an insult to the women of Gujarat.”

The Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Nationalist Congress Party too criticised Modi’s remark, even as the BJP said the Congress suffers from “Modi-phobia.”

During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the chief minister, while speaking on pressing issues like malnutrition among children and high maternal mortality rate in the state, said: “Gujarat is by and large a vegetarian and a middle-class state.

The middle-class is more beauty conscious than health conscious. That is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they will have a fight. She will tell her mother-I won’t drink milk, I’ll get fat.”

“He is not even sensitive towards women who support their families by sacrificing their food. He says that women are not eating because they are health conscious. The women of Gujarat should protest,” Soni said. “I think he is not fit to contest again in Gujarat.”

While RJD’s Lalu Prasad Yadav condemned the remarks, NCP’s Tariq Anwar said: “I think he (Modi) has given this kind of statement to hide his government’s failure in the health sector. It does not behove of a chief minister to speak like this.” BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said the Congress suffers from “Modi-phobia.”

“Whenever it (Congress) hears the name of Modi, it criticises. I can only pity the Congress because wherever they go they are afraid of Modi, that is why they criticise him even on non-political subject.”Meanwhile, the Gujarat government issued a clarification on Thursday evening.

“During an interview with Wall Street Journal Chief Minister Narendra Modi gave elaborate answer to a question regarding malnutrition,” the release stated.
