Celebrating Teachers’ day is an opportunity for teachers to have a self-introspection and to update themselves with the modern trends in education and knowledge, opined Puttur Bettampady Government First Grade College Principal Dr Varadaraja Chandragiri.

He was delivering a special lecture during the Teachers’ Day celebration programme at Bunt’s Hostel in City on Wednesday.

“We had a great past adorned by great teachers and had the opportunity to receive knowledge from eminent teachers. However, we shall not stick to the past but should always be open ourselves to analyse and receive newer knowledge,” he said.

“Teacher’s greatness is not diminishing in the present world, but unlike olden days, students have different mediums to gain knowledge.

Teachers should understand this fact and accordingly should change themselves,” he added. He observed that teachers’ role in the modern days is more of like a facilitator or guide, who shows them the right way.

Challenges of teaching

He said that it is a tragedy that good skilled teachers are in government institutions whereas talented students are studying in private institutions. Allowing private universities and foreign universities in India will make a deep impact over the education system in the country.

“The courses offered in such institutions will be more of like market friendly courses. Such courses could lead to the suppression of traditional courses which ultimately affect the rural students,’ he said.

He opined that in private institutions, faculty is not getting importance but the infrastructure. “Earlier, a student used to be proud by the name of the teacher who taught him but now they are known as the ‘product’ of the educational institution they studied.

Teachers should show self esteem as well as self confidence to overcome the challenges in the teaching field and should help the students to improve their creativity and rationality, he added.

Earlier, Karnataka Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat inaugurated the teachers’ day celebrations. Mayor Gulzar Banu, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar, Mangalore Taluk Panchayat President Bhavya Gangadhar, District Education Officer Y Shivaramaiah were also present during the function. The dignitaries offered floral tribute to the portrait of former President of India Sarveppalli Radhakrishnan, on whose birthday Teachers’ day is being celebrated.

A total of 47 retired teachers and 14 schools that scored cent percent result in the SSLC exam were honoured during the occasion. The programme was jointly organised by Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instruction and Teachers’ Welfare Fund.
