Livestock census from Sept 15

 The State government will conduct a livestock census from September 15 to October 15 to collect information on livestock and poultry population in the State.

Speaking to the media, Commissioner for Animal Husbandry Department Adoni Syed Saleem said enumerators will visit all households, enterprises and institutions both in rural and urban areas to collect the information. Livestock censes is conducted once in five years, he added.

Population of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, horses, ponies, mules, donkeys, camel, pigs, dogs (domestic) and rabbits will be covered under the census. As per 2007 livestock census, the State has 3.28 crore livestock and 4.24 crore poultry, he said.

The Animal Husbandry Department will conduct the census in coordination with the Karnataka Milk Federation, Revenue, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Education, Women and Child Development departments. The census data will be helpful for formulating policies and programmes in the livestock sector, he added.
