Kerala Dalit outfit under scanner

Shivaprasad, 60, was hacked to death on September 16 with no apparent provocation and, police say, in a clear attempt to demonstrate the militant nature of the organisation.

Two leaders of the Dalit Human Rights Movement (DHRM) have been picked up for planning the attack while the three-member team which murdered Shivaprasad is still absconding.
Director-General of Police Jacob Punnose said an enquiry was on to determine whether the organisation had any terrorist links.

The professed aims of the outfit are to protect the rights of socially vulnerable Dalit and tribal communities, insulate such marginalised and poor sections of the society from falling prey to alcohol and drugs, encourage English education and create legal awareness. The police say some DHRM tutors justified the use of terror for achieving the organisation’s social and political ends in secret study classes held in Dalit colonies at night.
