A woman was shot dead by a motorcycle-borne assailant in Rohini of outer Delhi on Tuesday. Police suspect personal enmity over her husband’s previous marriage.

Meenakshi Rana, 30, lived with her husband Parwinder and son Manshu, 4, at block B in Rohini sector 16. According to a senior police official, she was shot thrice and she died on the spot.

The incident took place around 8.30 am when Meenakshi was travelling in a rickshaw with her son near District Park in Rohini sector 16.

“She was going to drop Manshu to Kids Fort Nursery School when a man waylaid them. He stopped his motorcycle in front of their rickshaw and forced Meenakshi to get down. It has come to light they were then engaged in a heated argument,” the official added.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Meenakshi was seen leaving the spot after a while, but the man kept following her. “He fired three shots in the air and then shot Meenakshi thrice. He then fled,” said Manoj, a local resident.

During the melee, the rickshaw puller is believed to have made a call at the police control room. Eyewitnesses further emphasised that the manner in which Meenakshi was speaking to the accused suggested that they knew each other.

A police control room vehicle came to the spot after a short span, but by then the man was gone. “Meenakshi died on the spot .A crime team inspected the spot. We are investigating the matter from a personal enmity angle,” said Mohammad Akhtar Rizvi, additional deputy commissioner of police (outer).

Sources at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, where Meenakshi’s body is preserved, said she was shot in the head, chest and abdomen.

“The body will be handed over to her family after a post-mortem on Wednesday,” the official said. A case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged aith KN Katju Marg police station.

Sources said police suspect a court case over Parwinder’s previous marriage to be a reason for the attack. Parwinder was married to a woman named Ritu, who hails from Haryana’s Sonipat district, but they separated after Parwinder decided to marry Meenakshi seven years ago.

It is claimed that Ritu’s brother had been threatening Parwinder and Meenakshi.
