Notice on appointment to consumer forums

 The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday issued emergent notice to the State government, the department of Food and Civil Supplies (DFCS) in connection with a petition alleging violations in the appointment of a chairpersons for district consumer disputes grievance redressal forums (CGRF).

Narayana Rao and others had moved the High Court stating that the department had violated the norms while appointing chairpersons of district forums for Kodagu, Bidar, Hassan and Kolar.


As per Section 10 of the Consumer Protection Act 1986, applications should be invited from eligible candidates through publication of advertisement in two newspapers; later, a committee comprising president of the State Consumers Redressal Forum and Secretary to the Law department should select chairpersons and members of the district forums.

They appealed to the court to direct Principal Secretary, DFCS, to formulate rules for making appointments to district forums.

The Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna, ordered emergent notices to the State government, DFCS, Principal Secretary and others.
