Their long wait ultimately ended during the “navaratras” and the two lovers tied the nuptial knot on “Mahanavami,” (the ninth day of the navaratra) on Sunday.

Sixty-two-year old Parsadi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, about 300 km from here, married Moonga Devi, 60, of the neighbouring Chandauli district after having an affair for 20 long years.

The marriage was solemnised amid traditional fan fare in the presence of a large number of guests from both sides though everything there was not absolutely normal, said the witnesses.

A different marriage

While Parsadi was riding a donkey, the “baratis” (guests from the groom’s side) were carrying “snakes and scorpions” in specially designed pots, they said. “It was a different kind of marriage”, said Abhimanyu Singh, in whose mill compound the marriage was solemnised. “Everybody knew about their affair and all of us wanted to see them married,” Singh, a resident of Chaukia village near the village of Parsadi, said.

“The 60-year-old bride had arrived earlier than Parsadi at the venue and the couple garlanded each other in a brief ceremony,” he added.

No one however knows as to how the affair between Parsadi and Moonga Devi began and where the two had seen each other for the first time. “Neither Prasadi not Moonga ever said any thing about it,” Singh said.

But the people in the Parsadi’s village of Lathia Sahijani knew that he had an affair with Moonga Devi, who lived in Mughalsarai in the neighbouring Chandauli district.
Incidentally, this was Parsadi’s 12th marriage. Although he refused to divulge the details about his past marriages, according to villagers, two of his wives are still there but they were not against the marriage.
