'Wakf Board tampered with evidence'

Last Updated 15 September 2012, 19:20 IST

State Minorities’ Commission chairperson Anwar Manippady has accused the State Wakf Board of tampering with documents which are evidence in a land scam.

In March this year, Manippady had submitted a report to the State government about the irregularities in the Wakf Board. On Saturday, the commission released photographs showing heaps of unguarded files at the Board office, which, they claim, are being systematically manipulated or destroyed. “They are disposing of crucial files and the rest are being dumped haphazardly,” alleged Manippady, who has sought the government’s intervention in the matter.

Manipaddy said the government should seize all relevant documents in the case and take legal action against officials involved in the scam.

The Commission report identified irregularities over the span of the last decade, especially in the transfer of Wakf land to private parties through mutation. The report indicated the involvement of middlemen and politicians, including district Wakf officers of Karnataka State Board of Wakf, in the irregularities.
