An indefinite curfew was imposed in Dasna locality in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district after six people were killed and at least a dozen others, including some police officials, injured in the violence on Friday night over alleged desecration of a holy book.

The situation was stated to be “tense but under control”.

Trouble began with rumours that said some torn pages of a holy book had been found near Adhyatmik Nagar railway station in the district on Friday. It was alleged that some objectionable words had been written on the torn pages.

As the rumors spread, a large mob comprising members of a particular community assembled at the Masoori police station demanding registration of a case and action against the culprits.

Eyewitness accounts claimed that the police delayed action, triggering the violence.
While six people were killed in the violence, 12 others, including some policemen, were injured. The condition of two of the injured was stated to be critical.
