Reknidling spirit of Tulunadu

It was a day when the traditional sports and culture of Tulunadu were relived. Men and women, children and elders without any age bar enthusiastically took part in the competitions. A few were seen cheering their friends.

There were eight ‘Chenne Mane’ with 16 competitors facing each other. The competitors included children. On the other hand, youth were taking part in tying the coconut fronds.

These enthralling sight was at Ramakrishna School maidan and the event was Bunts sports meet organised by Siddivinayaka Prathishtana and Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samithi as a part of Ganeshotsava celebrations.

Youth were seen taking part in preparing baskets from bamboo, spoons from coconut shells, pots using the traditional pot making instrument with clay and so on.
 The urban youth could get a glimpse of the age-old tradition which is fast fading in the era of urbanisation, at the venue.  

The organisers said that the programme was held to create an awareness among the youth on the rural culture and tradition.

In Chenna Mane competition, the youth were seen taking part with their grandparents. There was demonstration on tying ‘Akki mudi’ (where rice is stored in Mudi made from hay) and preparing rope from hay.

The participants tying the coconut fronds had to complete the task within 15 minutes. Few were seen busy purchasing spoons made of coconut shells, baskets and so on.
Speaking after inaugurating the meet, Tulu Sahitya Academy Registrar Chandrahas Rai said “rural sports teach minute details on life to the children. Sports is essential along with academic activities. Sports help children in the development of personality.”

Actress Usha Bhandary said there is a need to create awareness on rural sports to children. There is a need to develop sportive spirit in them. The culture and tradition of the land should not fade away. Children should be made to read books related Tulu language, culture and tradition.

Bunt community leaders Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi, Asha Jyothi Rai, Kadri Navaneeth Shetty and others were present.
