A youth identified as Tameem Ansari was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Q-Branch Police near the Tiruchirappalli airport on Monday for allegedly trying to smuggle out sensitive information and pictures of key establishments in the country to Pakistan via Sri Lanka.

A resident of Thanjavur, Ansari was arrested before he could board a plane to Colombo, when a vehicle in which he was travelling was intercepted by the sleuths based on intelligence inputs, police sources said.

Ansari allegedly tried to smuggle sensitive informations like maps and pictures of the Defence Services Training College in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, besides that of some key infrastructure areas including the ports at Karaikal, Tuticorin and the airport at Tiruchi, to Pakistan through Sri Lanka, sources said.

Ansari, when questioned by the police, was found to be in possession of a CD which reportedly contained video recording of some security-sensitive areas, the sources said. He was remanded in judicial custody by a magistrate there till October 1 on Monday and later lodged in the Tiruchirappalli Central Jail.

Meanwhile, MDMK leader Vaiko, along with about 1,000 party cadres, left for Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh to “peacefully protest” against the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapakshe to MP on September 21, to lay the foundation stone for a Centre of Buddhist Studies.
