UP girl ends life over eve-teasing

Youth threatened to kill her if she continued to spurn him

Frustrated over being allegedly eve-teased regularly by a youth of her locality in Uttar Pradesh’s industrial town of Kanpur, about 90 kilometres from here, a teen committed suicide by setting herself ablaze.

Sixteen- year-old Anjali (name changed), a class 11 student, who had set herself ablaze at her residence in Hemant Vihar on Saturday, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Monday, according to police sources.

Anjali’s family members said a youth of the locality identified as Rohit Kumar alias Chotu used to tease her regularly. Rohit had expressed his love towards her on many occasions and had even written love letters to her. But she spurned him every time.

“Anjali had complained about the eve-teasing on several occasions,” Rama Kant, her father said.

The family had lodged a police complaint following which Rohit had been booked and sent to jail. He had been released on bail barely a few days back.

Anjali’s family members said Rohit had again started teasing her and this time he had also threatened to kill her and her family if she still spurned him.

Rohit had passed some lewd remarks at Anjali on Saturday while she was on her way back home from school.  She reportedly locked herself in a room and poured kerosene over her and set herself ablaze. There was no one at home at the time, police said.

The neighbours, on hearing her cries, broke open the doors of the room and doused the flames. Anjali suffered third degree burn injuries and was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. Despite all efforts by doctors, the teen died on Monday afternoon.
A case has been registered.  Rohit is absconding and search is on to nab him.

This is the third such incident in Kanpur this year.  Earlier two other girls had killed themselves after being molested.
