Travel through the Goan landscape

Carnival time

Garden City College hosted ‘Carnival De Goa’ on its campus recently. The sprawling campus was suddenly transformed into a beach-like atmosphere. Artificial waterfalls, lakes, forts, churches and Goa’s flora and fauna completed the picture.

The carnival began with a host of cultural programmes exemplifying the fun and frolic, which is quintessential to Goan culture. The festivities were kickstarted by Eligius Joanes, a first-semester student of Hotel Management, with a wonderful song.

The crowd swayed to the music, which he played on his keyboard. This was followed by a performance by Vibek Bhowmik, a first-semester student of Bachelor of Computer Applications.  In his address to the gathering, chairman of the Garden City Group of Institutions, Joseph V G, emphasised on the golden tribal treasures available in Goa.

“Goa has a totally different culture and is one place that people must visit,” he says. Susri Sangeeta Sahu, a third-semester student pursuing her Bachelors in journalism, who compered the event, says, “While working for the event, I met a lot of interesting people and learnt a lot about the culture of Goa.”

A short video on Goan history and the beaches of Goa were screened.  An interesting fashion show, knit around the theme of beaches, marked the end of carnival. Chetanjeet Irom, a first-semester student of journalism, quips, “We had a great time working with glitters and variety of colours.”

His classmate Prakriti Sharma says, “I learnt a lot about team work and how to work with different people under tight deadlines. Although it was quite hectic, it was fun working for ‘Carnival De Goa’.”

The campus was lit up with colourful lights and a grand parade was organised ensuring that the entire campus soaked in a carnival-like atmosphere. Everyone was decked up in funky masks tapping their feet to Goan music. The fun and frolic continued with the students participating in a variety of interesting games like treasure hunt.

Swaying to the peppy tracks, Asrita Adiga from the first semester, Bachelor of Tourism, says, “The carnival opened my eyes to a different culture and a new horizon. It brought about a sense of oneness.”

The colourful evening ended on a delicious note with a beautiful Goan dinner, which was served in the ‘Green House’, decorated to resemble a beach-side shack. The menu comprised authentic Goan cuisine like beef vindaloo, chicken xaccuti, tuna salad, grilled mackerel and a variety of breads like cheese garlic bread and pav.

And the dessert section was no less enticing with caramel custard and fruit salad.  Michelle Alvarez, a final-year journalism student, says, “The Goan carnival was the most entertaining thing that I ever participated in on campus. The festivity and high spirits shall stay with me for a long time to come.”
