After the Trinamool Congress (TMC) ministers submitted their resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Friday, the state Congress said its ministers in the West Bengal government will resign on Saturday.

“All the Congress ministers in the West Bengal Cabinet will assemble before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday evening and hand over their resignations to her,” State Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya said at a press conference here on Friday.

“We have called a meeting of our ministers on Saturday at 11:30 am and after that in the evening they will put in their papers to the chief minister,” Bhattacharya said.

When asked whether they have received any instruction from Congress high command, Bahhtacharya said, “We have received written instruction from Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed.”

State Irrigation Minister and Congress Leader Manas Bhunia said, “I contacted the chief minister's secretariat for an appointment with her for handing over our resignations. We have been allotted time at 5 pm on Saturday”.

Having 42 members in the 294-member State Assembly (two more than the CPM), the Congress may also stake a claim to the post of the leader of the Opposition currently held by CPM's Surjya Kanta Mishra.
