NCW for judicial probe into attack on woman cop

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has suggested a judicial probe into the brutal attack on woman cop Pramila Padhi during the violence at a recently held Congress rally.

The commission has also asked the Odisha government to arrange counseling by experts for the injured lady police constable to help her to come out of the shock and trauma she had gone through after the attack.

Chari Wali Khanna, a member of the NCW, who was on a two day visit to conduct an inquiry into the incident, had met Pramila Padhi at her residence on Thursday. Padhi is still recovering from her injury though she has already been discharged from hospital.

“We think, the Odisha government should order a judicial probe into the incident as per Supreme Court guidelines. This will be recommended by me in my report. The police woman should also be provided with professional counseling to come out of the shock and trauma,” said Padhi.

The NCW member also met Director-General of State Police Prakash Mishra and Chief Secretary Bijoy Patnaik on Friday and held discussions with both of them about the incident. She also met representatives of the women wing of the state Congress.

After the violence, several women organisations had petitioned the NCW on the incident and appealed for a probe into the brutal attack on the woman cop. The state Mahila Congress had also filed a petition with the commission appealing for a probe into the attack on its members by the police at the rally.
