Pay central excise, service tax online


The Department of Central Excise and Service Tax on Wednesday launched Automation of Central Excise and Service Tax (ACES) software using which taxpayers can directly complete formalities and pay taxes through online  www.aces.gov.in
ACES enables assessee to obtain registration under central excise and service tax online, to file statutory returns claims electronically, and tracks the status and their document online.

Speaking after the launch of the software Chief Commissioner of Central Excise Bangalore Zone Subhash Chander said that advantages of the online system will also help the assessee to tack on refunds online and settle disputes, if any, quickly.
Bangalore zone presently has 78,000 service tax assesses, besides 8,000 manufacture units who remit central excise.

D P Dash, ADG (systems) said ACES application has been rolled out in the central excise commissionerates of Coimbatore, Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur.  The department proposes to connect all the central excise, customs, and service tax offices across the country through Wide Area Network.
Replying to a query, he said while payment of taxes online is not mandatory, he felt the assessees need to switch over the new system considering its advantages.
The assesses can seek help of the ACES service desk by sending e-mail to aces.servicedesk@icegate.gov.in or calling up national toll free number 1800-425-4251 on any working day from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 7 pm.

Target
Meanwhile, top officials of the Bangalore zone of the Department of Central Excise and Service Tax expressed confidence of meeting its set target for the fiscal 2009-10.
“Despite the slow down in economy and cut in duties we will meet the target of Rs 4,550 crore for central excise and Rs 4,900 crore for service tax”, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Bangalore Zone Subhash Chander said.
The department has collected Rs 1,480 crore under central excise and Rs 1,300 crore under service tax by August end.
Bangalore zone presently has 78,000 service tax assesses besides 8,000 manufacture units who remit central excise.
