A 25-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming a chemical with Nitro combination at her Timarpur residence in north Delhi on early Sunday morning. The chemical is usually used in printing press.

Police are questioning woman’s family members as no suicide note was found at the spot. The victim Payal Sharma took the chemical from the office of her husband Ajay Sharma who runs a printing press at home.

Woman, who hailed from West Bengal and was living at Wazirabad in Timarpur with her husband and in-laws, consumed the chemical at 1 am on Monday.

She was rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital by her husband, where during treatment she succumbed to her injuries.

“We received a call from woman’s family regarding the incident. A team rushed to her house and another one to the hospital. Before we could take Payal’s statement, she succumbed to her injuries,” said a senior police officer.

During investigation, police found that Payal got married to Ajay, 32, four years ago and they have a nine-month-old baby girl and three-year-old son. She was living in a joint family with her in-laws.

On Saturday night, Payal and Ajay quarrelled over some household issue before she consumed the chemical.

However, Payal’s in-laws said they she was depressed. Police have ordered a sub-dvisional magistrate inquiry into the matter to ascertain if it is a case of dowry death.

“We are questioning the in-laws, neighbours and woman’s family to ascertain if she was emotionally or physically tortured for dowry,” said the officer.
