Guest dies in celebratory firing

He came to attend party, stray bullet hits him in chest

A 23-year-old man was killed in a celebratory firing during an engagement party at a guest house in Najafgarh, south west Delhi on Sunday night, police said.

The victim, Pankaj Kumar, succumbed to a gunshot injury after someone in the crowd opened fire during which a bullet hit him in the chest. He was attending his cousin Mohit’s ring ceremony.

“We received a call at about 10:30 pm that a man was accidently shot at in the party. A police team rushed to the spot and found Pankaj in a pool of blood. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” said a senior police officer.

During investigation, police found that Pankaj, a resident of Dharampura in Najafgarh, had come to Gagan Garden to attend Mohit’s engagement party. Some youths were dancing on the dance floor when someone in the crowd fired and a bullet hit Pankaj on his chest, said the officer.

Pankaj, who runs a shop, fell on the ground. “We have registered a case at Baba Hardas Nagar police station and started the investigation,” said the officer.
Police is ascertaining if the gun shot was fired deliberately to kill Pankaj or it was random firing that killed him.

Nobody has been arrested so far and police are questioning several people who attended the function. The police are also trying to find the person who fired the bullet.
