Katju bats for Sarabjit's release

Last Updated 24 September 2012, 20:11 IST

Press Council of India chairman Markandey Katju in Monday appealed to the president and prime minister of Pakistan to release Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who is on a death row for over two decades there, on humane grounds.

Katju, in a letter addressed to Pakistan’s Attorney General Irfan Qadir, said he had personally gone through the evidence against Singh, who had convicted for alleged involvement in a bomb blasts in 1990, “meticulously and found it extremely weak”.

Pakistani officials, meanwhile, have refused to allow Sarabjit’s lawyer Awais Sheikh to meet him in the Lahore jail after counsel returned from India carrying letters and personal items for the Indian prisoner.
