BSY may skip BJP meet

Last Updated 25 September 2012, 18:10 IST

The State BJP leaders may breath easy when they attend the party’s national executive and council meetings at Surajkund in Haryana from Thursday, with Yeddyurappa likely to skip the conclave.

They will informally discuss with the Delhi leaders the developments in the Karnataka unit of the party, including the appointment of a new State party president.

Of late, Yeddyurappa has been going to the media saying that he has been humiliated to the core and sees no point in continuing in the party. After taking out all his pent up anger against the party leaders in Delhi as well as in the State, Yeddyurappa has decided to keep off the meetings.

It is said that on Tuesday he walked into the Art of Living Ashram on Kanakapura Road to take ‘rest’ for the next three days. His close associate and MLC M D Lakshminarayana is likely to join him at the Ashram on Wednesday evening.

Though Yeddyurappa, for now, has decided to give the meetings a miss, he may change his mind if he gets a call from the central leaders asking him to make it, it is said.

In an interview to a TV channel which was telecast on Tuesday, Yeddyurappa said,  “I was told that I would be made party president within 24 hours after I quit as chief minister. I was told I would be reinstated as chief minister after the High Court quashes the Lokayukta FIR against me on illegal mining. They did not keep their word.

I felt humiliated. Why should I continue in the party ?” Yeddyurappa said.

Replying to a question whether any of the party’s central leaders had enjoyed the benefits of the illegal mining money, Yeddyurappa said he would not like to make any allegations, except saying that let there be an inquiry if need be.

Top BJP leaders from the State, including Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, State party president K S Eshwarappa, party MPs and State executive members are leaving for Surajkund to attend the meetings.

It is learnt that senior BJP leader and KSPCB chairman Vaman Acharya, who will be in Delhi on Wednesday, has decided to talk to the high command to explore the ways of retaining Yeddyurappa. It is learnt Acharya met Minister Shobha Karandlaje to find out whether she was ready to shoulder the responsibility as the State unit president.

However, she did not show any interest, knowing that she is not left with many friends in the party, it is said.

The names of Dharwad North MP Prahlad Joshi, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and minister Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri  are doing the rounds for the post of State BJP chief. Eshwarappa said the leaders from the State were going with an open mind to discuss the issue.
