Several top companies and educational institutions from Taiwan will participate in a four-day expo to be held in Bangalore from September 27.

Disclosing this to Deccan Herald here on Tuesday, Wenchyi Ong, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre, observed that the EMMA Expo India (electronics, machinery, moulds, auto parts) is being held in the IT hub for the first time in Bangalore. For the last five years, Chennai was home for the Taiwanese expo.

The Representative, nearly equal in status to an ambassador, said over 200 companies, 50 in each of the four sectors, would participate in the expo to be held at the Bangalore international exhibition centre.

Keen on attracting Indian students to its 30 universities for postgraduate courses and PhD, Taiwan education centre will hold the higher education expo to provide on-the-spot counselling to potential students and display reference materials regarding courses, scholarship opportunities and admission process.

Wenchyi said the cap on the intake of Indian students in Taiwanese universities has been kept at 500 so far but government has plans to gradually increase it to a maximum of 3,000. He said Taiwan’s degrees were recognised world over and cost of study in its universities is much cheaper than any other country.

Claiming that Taiwan was one of the best destinations for Indian students, he said tuition cost, on an average, will be about Rs 2 lakh per annum in the country, which is one tenth of the cost that one would incur in the UK or the USA.

“I am asking parents to think in very realistic terms—do you want to spend 50-60,000 dollars to send your children to destinations like US or UK or land in Taiwan to allow them to get an equally good degree at a very low cost. Our degrees are recognised world over,” he said.

As many as 460 students from India are studying in Taiwanese campuses. They get scholarship from their respective universities, government and corporate.
