Last Updated 29 September 2012, 20:11 IST

A man has reportedly been arrested for suspected involvement in Friday’s daylight heist of Rs 5.25 crore in Defence Colony, sources said on Saturday.

The police, however, refused to confirm the arrest of the accused who, according to sources, is one of the five armed assailants who had waylaid and hijacked a cash replenishment agency vehicle.

Sources also said that police have identified three of the arrested man’s accomplices, who are believed to be linked to one of the robber gangs in western Uttar Pradesh.

Police sources said that the manner in which the entire episode unfolded is quite similar to the modus operandi of some UP gangs, especially those which are active in Delhi and the national capital region.

“The manner in which the entire episode unfolded is quite similar to the modus operandi of some UP gangs, especially those which are active in Delhi and the national capital region. We are trying to piece together the details of the entire incident with CCTV footage available and ascertain the involvement of a particular gang. We have some clues and are working on them,” a senior police official said.

Two cash chests were also recovered from an area near Select Citywalk (a shopping mall) in Saket on Saturday morning which were the same chests looted by the robbers, the police said.

According to Vivek Gogia, joint commissioner of Delhi Police (south-western range), eight police teams, including two groups of crime branch officers, have been formed to gather intelligence.

Sources said police plan to conduct raids in several parts of Delhi and UP to detain people having similar criminal history. They said around two dozen people in south Delhi’s Hauz Rani have been interrogated after the cash van was found abandoned in the area.

“Police suspect that the robbers might have taken a rented accommodation in Malviya Nagar, as the cash van and cash chests were found in the area,” sources said.
