Celebrating Punjabi, the musical way

Last Updated 01 October 2012, 14:12 IST

Gifted with  mellifluous voice, celebrated Sufi Punjabi singer and poet, Satinder Sartaaj treated  Delhiites with his enthralling performance at Talkatora Stadium.

With his popular songs Sai Ve Sadi Fariyad Tere Tayi, Nikki Jehi Kudi and Hiriye Fakiriye, Satinder made it an evening full of entertainment for both the Punjabi and non-Punjabi speaking audience. In what was a more than a concert, the venue resonated with soulful
music.

The concert inaugurated by CM Sheila Dikshit was part of an annual literary award function organised by Punjabi Academy. Rising to fame with Cheerey Waaleya,  Satinder says he enjoys performing in Delhi. “I love to perform here because of the love I receive here. I have a big fan following too and Delhiites enjoy and appreciate Punjabi music.”
Speaking on the same lines as Satinder, Rawail Singh, secretary, Punjabi Academy, opined, “Punjabi music is loved by one and all, irrespective of their mother tongue.

It brings a fast and energetic vibe which makes you sway to its beats automatically. The concert celebrates the richness of Punjabi literature in a unique way. Satinder has a unique style of captivating his audience. His performance added colour to the function.”
For Satinder, Punjabi music has gained immense popularity round the globe for its bhangra beats. “But Punjabi music is not just about foot-tapping music, it has  more to offer. Sometimes, beautiful compositions with a message in them are also really nice.”

Having a doctorate in Sufi singing from Punjab University, Satinder believes that a person has to be inclined towards the art before undertaking any formal training in the discipline he desires. He says, “Formal education in singing doesn’t matter much if you are not an artist.  However, training helps in grooming a personality and to be a better performer.”

Besides being a musician, Satinder has an inclination for poetry too. Generally people have common notion that Sufi music and poetry are two different things.  “Sufi music is simply a song sung in Sufi manner.  Sufi music in itself is poetry,” says Satinder.

The Punjabi Academy also conferred lifetime achievement awards to Nachhattar for his contribution to Punjabi literature and Som Dutt Battu for his contribution to Punjabi culture.
