Plug water leakages: Expert tells BWSSB

Last Updated 07 October 2012, 19:33 IST

Irrigation expert, Capt Raja Rao, on Sunday sought the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to take immediate steps to plug the leakage of Cauvery water being supplied to Bangalore.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Karnataka Industries and Commerce Kannada Association on “Cauvery: Bangalore, its water problems and solutions,” Rao pointed out that it was possible to save 200 (MLD) million litres of water per day if steps were taken to plug the leaks.

The comments gain significance in the light of receding water levels in the reservoirs of the Cauvery basin and the mounting pressure on meeting the water requirement of Bangalore city.

Strict action

He said the BWSSB should take strict action against officials who fail to plug the leakages. Rao said it was projected that Bangalore would require 85 tmc ft of drinking water by the year 2050. The present requirement is around 30 tmc ft.
