<p>Residents of Kollegal taluk are in the midst of an unusual crisis. More than 110 km of Cauvery river flows through the taluk. Yet, more than 260 villages in the taluk suffer from acute water shortage.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The situation is no different in other parts of Chamarajanagar district. Even though Cauvery flows near several of these villages, the residents in these areas face acute water shortage owing to lack of implementation of projects to provide drinking water.<br /><br />Chamarajanagar has 830 villages, of which 251 are in Chamarajanagar, 188 in Gundlupet, 341 in Kollegal and 50 in Yalandur.<br /><br />The panchayat raj department of zilla panchayat prepared a report indicating that 350 villages in the district face severe drinking water shortage.<br /><br />The problem is also faced by people residing in the fringes of the forest in Hanur region of Kollegal taluk. Baragi, Hangala, Begur hoblis in Gundlupet, Harave, Santhemarahalli in Chamarajanagar also suffer from water scarcity. When people turn to dig borewells, they have to bore through at least 600 feet to find water. <br /><br />Owing to the demand for water, a project at an estimated cost of Rs 261.05 crore has been taken up in 166 villages of Chamarajanagar taluk and 131 villages in Gundlupet. Tenders have been called for implementation of the project.<br /><br />However, Kollegal, Yalandur and Hanur continue to suffer as no drinking water projects have been taken up. In Kollegal, 260 villages and 45 villages in Yalandur continue to cry for water.<br /><br />Each year, the district administration submits an estimated Rs 200 crore project proposal for Kollegal and Rs 50 crore plan for Yalandur. <br /><br />Lack of initiative by elected representatives has led to the proposal taking a backseat. Unless district in-charge minister and other representatives demand implementation of drinking water projects, Kollegal and Yalandur residents will continously have to suffer.<br /></p>
