Rs 17 cr to spruce up Belgaum for D-Day

The Karnataka government seems to be in a generous mood while spending money on sprucing up Belgaum city to welcome President Pranab Mukherjee and a host of politicians for the inauguration of Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on October 11.

It is said that it has blown a whopping Rs 17 crore for the event. For the two scheduled programmes on the Soudha premises, in which the President will take part, the Assembly Secretariat has released Rs two crore to the district administration which is making the required arrangements. The President will spend nearly two hours from 12.30 pm at the Soudha.

In addition, the Public Works Department has released Rs eight crore for repair of main roads, footpaths and related works to beautify the City. The President will attend two more public programmes the same day. So, many roads are being repaired and asphalted, officials said.

Sources said boarding and lodging facilities were being provided for nearly 600 VIPs and about 400 government officers. The Belgaum City Corporation has released Rs five crore for the event. The deputy commissioner’s office has released Rs two crore.

Sources said the government would present a two-kg silver statue of Rani Chennamma to the President.
